Smithsonian X 3D コンテンツ

今、3Dプリンタが過剰な程注目されていますが、どの位の方々が自由にデータ作成できるでしょうか。プリンタ自体は低価格化が進み安いものでは数万程度から購入できるようになりました。
しかし、データが無い事にはタダの箱となります。
プリンタの能力もコンテンツデータ次第で表現域が左右されると言っても過言では無いでしょう。

そんな中で、コンテンツデータ自体も情報公開する動きが出てきています。

ご紹介したいのはアメリカを代表するスミソニアン博物館。
スミソニアン博物館

スミソニアン博物館は科学、産業、技術、自然史を中心とした所蔵品を所持しています。
所蔵品数は1億3700万点とも言われ世界最大級との事。
その所蔵品を全て3Dデータ化するという目標のようです。
利用は個人および非商用目的に限定されており、米国内での使用用途は授業の教材などを想定されているようです。

Microsoft Windows

All major browsers on Windows are supported, including Microsoft Internet Explorer 11, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

 Apple OS X

On OS X, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox fully support the Smithsonian X 3D Explorer. Safari users need to enable WebGL first since it is disable by default. In order to enable WebGL on Safari:
  • Open the Safari menu and select Preferences.
  • Click the Advanced tab in the Preferences window.
  • At the bottom of the window, check "Show developer menu in menu bar"
  • Open the developer menu in the menu bar and select Enable WebGL.

Apple iOS

Apple does not permit the use of WebGL on iOS devices such as the iPhone and iPad. Although these devices technically fully support 3D graphics in the web browser, due to a restriction of Apple it is not currently possible to use the Smithsonian X 3D explorer on iOS devices.

Smithonian X 3Dは、WebGL技術が使われているようです。
WebGL対応の browsers では3D表示も可能です。そしてSTLファイルとしても提供されている事が心強いです。
現在の登録データはまだまだ限定されているようですが、今後早期に充実されていくものだと思います。

話題性が高い3Dプリンタですが、このようにコンテンツが充実していくと、利用できる用途も拡大していきますので今後の動向が楽しみです。
日本もコンテンツの拡充に期待します。
